Anton

Anton wasn't in denial, his mind didn't work that way. His chosen defence mechanism, the suspension of disbelief. Why he chose not to take the issues up with Elizabeth is something none of us will ever know. He attended his wedding, he remained committed to the marriage. Anton stood in the church, before his family, the guests and God. He seemed a little edgy, nervous even, but he was getting married, these things were to be expected. The suspension of disbelief is a wonderful thing. “Do you take this woman to be your lawfully wedded wife?” asked the minister. Anton took a deep breath, he looked around the church and then right in that moment, the suspension broke.

“Why would I?” he replied. “She's a dirty cheating slut.” To a number of groans and sighs he walked out of the church without a backward glance. Elizabeth took three, maybe four steps to follow him but the banging of the church door frightened Joanna and Jessica. The babies started crying, for a moment Elizabeth was torn. Maternal instinct directed her to tend to her children.
